| September 2006 News |
With Labor Day past, the summer food season is officially behind us and we launch into a whole new set of wonderful fall foods. Chef Sarig is working up a new menu for this weekend that will include fall squashes, sweet potatoes, hearty soups and crisp fall vegetables plus all the other wonderful local ingredients we’re getting now.
Zely & Ritz continues to get great press and reviews in local and national magazines and newspapers. Check out this month’s issue of The Gourmet Diner and see the latest Zely & Ritz review http://thegourmetdiner.com/ZelyRitz.html.
September and October are full of great events and special dinners that you should mark your calendar for now.
Friday, September 15th from 11:00 to 12:30 Chef Sarig will be facing one of his greatest culinary challenges as one of two featured celebrity chefs at the Museum Of Natural Science’s BugFest Cookoff. BugFest is the Museum’s biggest public event of the year and Chef Sarig will be whipping up culinary delights for the press and public with various bugs as the main ingredient. We’re not sure exactly what Chef Sarig will be cooking yet, but we’re sure that he can even make bugs taste great.
On Tuesday, September 19th, we will have our annual Spanish Wine Dinner with host Seth Gross and Karla Kilgore of Classical Wines. According to Seth no knows more about Spanish wines than Karla so we are really looking forward to hear her speak. This has become one of our most popular dinners and was sold out last year, so please get your reservation in for this great dinner early. Chef Sarig and Nancy are tasting the wines this week and a menu will be posted by early next week.
On Thursday, October 12th, we will have a combination Wine and Olive Oil Dinner with the Gabrielle Collection from Napa Valley. They have three incredible wines and several varieties of olive oils that chef Sarig is tasting now and working on the menu. You can find out more about these wines and oils at http://www.gwines.net/.
On Tuesday, October 24th we will have our 2nd in a series of special beer dinners featuring Duck Rabbit Brewery. The first dinner back in the spring was a great success and we plan to do more of these as more local micro breweries come on line with fantastic artesianal brews. Duck Rabbit is one of the best of the new North Carolina based breweries and Chef Sarig will have this menu ready soon. To learn more about the beers they offer you can visit their website at www.duckrabbitbrewery.com.
Moore Square Farmers Market and Coon Rock Farm Produce
We’re still going strong at the downtown Raleigh Moore Square Farmers Market every Wednesday from 11:00 till 2:00. In addition to all the great Coon Rock Farm produce, chicken and eggs there are about a dozen other local farmers offering cheese, meats, and vegetables. It’s a great place to stop for your supply of locally grown products for your mid-week meals or to stock up for the weekend. And remember you can email Richard anytime at richard@zelyandritz.com or richard@coonrockfarm.com to place orders for veggies, eggs, or chicken in advance to pick up at the market on Wednesday or anytime at Zely in Raleigh or the farm in Hillsborough. For more information about the market check out www.godowntownraleigh.com/farmersmarket.
For those of you interested in learning more about local food, the NC Cooperative Extension Service has started putting out a great newsletter. This month's issue has stories about the first farm-raised prawn (shrimp) harvest that will occur near the end of September, a local pick your own apple and pear orchard, and local muscadine and scuppernong grapes. You can also learn how to purchase your own heirloom apple trees and get help in their maintenance from the local Master Gardener program. You can check it out at http://www.localfoodsgazette.info.
It’s been an absolutely fabulous summer for us at the restaurant and the farm. Thanks to all of you who dined with us and made it so special. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
